NSEA works in collaboration with Shuksan, Whatcom, and Cascades Montessori middle schools each spring to provide a streamside restoration project for 20 to 40
middle school students each seasom. NSEA coordinates the restoration project and
provides the students with the necessary knowledge, tools, and materials to
complete the project.
Together, the students work to prepare the site for planting by removing invasive species and laying down mulch. The middle school students then plant native trees and shrubs in the newly restored site. The middle school students research a community need and chose a service project based on their interests. After completing the project the middle school students then reflect on the community service and create a presentation to share with their mentors and peers. Middle School Service Learning
