Nooksack River Stewards

The Nooksack River Stewards program is collaboration between the United States Forest Service and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA). The program is designed to provide salmon-focused environmental educational opportunities to recreational users of the Nooksack River.

River Stewards Summer Interpretive Programs Happening Now!

All River Stewards events are free and open to the public – no registration required.  This program is based in Glacier, WA and folks can join the River Stewards for a Saturday evening program to learn about salmon and stream ecology and the status of wild salmon runs in the Nooksack River while snacking on smoked salmon, cream cheese, and crackers around the campfire or for a walk up the Horseshoe Bend Trail Sunday morning to discover the vast aquatic mysteries of the world of rivers and riparian zones.

Wild About Salmon Campfire Talks - 6:00pm
Join NSEA River Stewards around the campfire and learn about salmon ecology and the fish of the Nooksack River! For more information, contact us at 360-715-0283.

Location: Douglas Fir Campground Picnic Shelter – Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

Dates: Campfire Talks are held on the following Saturdays at 6:00pm: July 10th, July 17th, July 24th, July 31st, August 7th, August 14th, August 21st, August 28th, September 4th

Noisy Waters: A Nooksack River Walk - 9:00am
Join NSEA River Stewards as they explore the vast aquatic mysteries of the world of the river.

Location: Horseshoe Bend Trail Head – Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

Dates: River Walks are held on the following Sundays at 9:00am: July 11th, July 18th, July 25th, August 1st, August 8th, August 15th, August 22nd, August 29th, September 5th

Additional Dates: River Walks will also be held on the following Saturdays at 10:00am: September 10th, 17th, and 24th.

Nooksack River Stewards staff a

n informational table at the Glacier Public Service Center during summer weekends. We offer information and answer questions about salmon of the Nooksack and salmon stewardship ethics.

Campfire Talks: Nooksack River Stewards offer campfire talks at the Douglas Fir campground rotundas summer evenings at 6pm from the second weekend in July through Labor Day weekend. The talks included a presentation on salmon life cycles, salmon identification, habitat needs, the health of our Nooksack salmon runs, and river stewardship.  Pick a Saturday and join us!

Interpretive Stream Walks: Nooksack River Stewards provide guided stream walks for the public along the Horseshoe Bend and other local trails. These walks offer an in depth look at the native plants, water quality, and aquatic insect life that fulfill critical habitat needs for salmon. In late summer as salmon begin their spawning, stream walks may include opportunities to observe salmon spawning activity along some of the Nooksack’s tributaries.  Stream walks are scheduled on Sundays at 9:00am through Labor Day weekend and then move to Saturdays at 10:00am through the month of September.


River Rafter Talks: Nooksack River Stewards meet with several whitewater rafting groups throughout the summer on the North Fork Nooksack River to share information about salmon species present in the river and important riparian habitat the groups will encounter during their adventure.

Other Activities: Nooksack River Stewards provide salmon educational signage at campgrounds and other locations throughout the Nooksack watershed. Nooksack River Stewards may assist with or monitor additional scheduled activities along the Nooksack throughout the summer and fall.

Recognition: In 2007 this program was awarded the Rise to the Future Award from the United States Forest Service.
