Careers, Internships & Board Service

Work with Us

There are three ways to work with us: staff positions, our Future Leaders of Whatcom Waters (FLOW) internship program, and service on our Board of Directors.

Careers

Open positions

Thank you for your interest in working at NSEA! Openings are posted here as they become available.

There are no staff positions available at this time. Sign up for our e-newsletter to get updates about our work and job postings.

At NSEA, we strongly encourage candidates of all racial and gender identities, cultural and economic backgrounds, and of any sexual orientation to apply for employment and service opportunities. NSEA is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, veteran status, or marital status in employment or the provision of services.

Internships

The Future Leaders of Whatcom Waters (FLOW) internship program

FLOW offers hands-on experience in stream restoration, environmental education, and community outreach. Interns gain professional development and real-world work experience while helping NSEA accomplish more on the ground and improve our programs. The Stream Stewards Internship is recruiting now for fall 2026.

With Western Washington University

Earn a WWU certificate while you intern.

Through the Stream Stewards Internship, WWU students can earn one of two academic certificates in salmon enhancement, blending coursework with real restoration work in Whatcom County creeks.

Board Service

Join our Board of Directors!

NSEA’s board is an engaged working board, and we commit to giving you the information and tools you need to stand as a vocal and visible ambassador for our work. Here is what we ask of board members.

Meetings

Monthly board and committee meetings (except August and December), plus one annual board retreat and one annual community celebration.

Attendance

Board members are expected to be timely and present, with a maximum of four absences from board meetings.

Term

Board members commit to the role for a minimum of three years.

Fundraising

Participate in fundraising, including an annual financial commitment at a level that is meaningful to you.

Timing

Open positions are generally filled in the fall, and interest forms are reviewed as they come in.

How the application process works

  1. Submit the interest formComplete the online form. Our Board Member Development Committee (BMDC) reviews every application.
  2. Meet the teamIf invited, you’ll meet with our Executive Director and one or two board members, then attend a board meeting as a guest. The BMDC Chair follows up by phone to answer your questions.
  3. Board voteA recommendation for board candidates goes to the Executive Committee, and the board votes at the following board meeting.

Working at NSEA

All candidates are welcome.

NSEA is dedicated to integrating principles of social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion to further our mission and vision, while removing barriers and providing an inclusive environment that is safe and open to everyone.

In 2020, NSEA developed a Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Focus Group made up of staff and board members. The group has coordinated staff and board trainings and recommended changes to our hiring and HR policies, and in 2021 our Board of Directors approved a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policy.
