Watersheds

The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association works to restore freshwater habitat in watersheds throughout Whatcom County, focusing mainly on the Nooksack River basin and certain adjacent tributary streams.  A watershed is an area of land where water falls and drains to a common point.  A watershed is also the way that nature divides the landscape, or as scientist and geographer John Wesley Powell said, “[a watershed is] that area of land, a bounded hydrologic system, within which all living things are inextricably linked by their common water course and where, as humans settled, simple logic demanded that they become part of a community.”  Watersheds come in all shapes and sizes.  They cross county, state, and national boundaries.  In Whatcom County alone there are nearly 100 watersheds.  Click on the links to your right to discover more information about your local watershed and the watersheds of Whatcom County.
